Polyester, a popular alternative to aluminum was developed within the Clondalkin Group over 15 years ago as a solution to allow metal detection into the yogurt market. It has since evolved from its initial stages to be a lidding solution with multiple properties.
These include-
- The ability to conduct 100% metal detection
- Improved graphics, and product presentation giving the product the ‘Wow’ factor on the supermarket shelf
- Memory – the appearance of the packed product remains ‘new’ with no folding of the pull tab
- Improved sealing characteristics and a smoother peel
- Tear resistance – Polyester lidding will not tear where aluminum will tear
- Vastly increased puncture resistance (approx 7 times that of the current aluminum spec)
- Less aggressive embossing pattern allows for small print to be read more easily
- Microwaveable – allows a product to be micro waved without having to fully remove the foil lid
- Polyester lidding consumes 65% less energy during production
- Aluminum provides NO energy when recycled in an incineration plant whereas polyester provides high energy levels when incinerated.
- Polyester lidding is 50% lighter than Aluminum resulting in 30% less energy consumption in transportation.
